  • Home of Brunswick Stew

    Home of Brunswick Stew

In 1988, the Virginia General Assembly issued a decree naming Brunswick County the home of Brunswick Stew, proclaiming it to be the place of origin of this "astonishing gastronomic miracle". The origin of this tasty concoction can be traced back to 1828. Each year on the second Saturday of October, crews gather from miles around to stir up their own version of Brunswick Stew. Men known as stewmasters tend huge cauldrons, stirring the contents with boat oars, cooking up hundreds of quarts to be judged. These stews are very thick, often not declared done until an oar can stand upright in the center. Come join us and discover your favorite version of this Brunswick delicasy.
