All dogs four months or older must have a Brunswick County dog tag. Dog tags go on sale the first working day of January. The deadline to purchase dog tags is January 31st. For each dog tag, proof of current rabies vaccination must be presented. The current price for each dog tag is $10.00; 30-dog kennel tags are $50.00, and duplicates are $1.00 per tag. Failure to purchase a dog tag in a timely manner could result in a summons being issued to the owner by the Brunswick County Animal Control Department. If found in violation, the owner could be fined $25-$500, depending on violation(s), per dog plus incur cost of court.
Brunswick County dog licenses consist of a receipt and a metal tag; both must be retained and shown upon request by law. License receipts should be kept where they are available for you to present them for inspection upon request of the Animal Control Officer. The tag must be securely fastened to a substantial collar worn by the dog at all times. Any dog found loose in the county not wearing a county tag (for that calendar year) will be considered a stray and impounded by Animal Control.
Dog tags may be purchased by mail or in person at the Treasurer's Office at 228 N Main St Ste 100, Lawrenceville VA 23868. When purchasing by mail, dog owners must send a copy of a current rabies vaccination certificate for each dog as well as the applicable fee, and a self-addressed stamped envelope. Checks or money orders are to be made to the County of Brunswick. Once received, purchased dog tags will be mailed back to the dog owner.
